A Tale of Two Roma's

Remind me @John q , what are your water parameters in terms of dGH and Kh? Do you use tap for your water change, and if so what nitrate and phosphate values does it have?

0.6 dkh & 3 dgh

Yes I use tap water. Typical values at this time of year are 0.6 dkh, 1 dgh, 4ppm No3, 1ppm Po4, 6ppm Ca, 1ppm Mg.

Full day of sleeves in the tank tomorrow
The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft a-gley.”
Didn't quite manage two back to back water changes, life has a habit of throwing one a curved ball.
What we did manage was a1x 65% wc.

Ladies and gentlemen, the weekend has departed.

Echinodorus decided its time to flower.

Not to be outdone bucephalandra.

Removed leaves from said echinodorus, probably 400mm in length.

Thanks for reading.

Small update on the the other tank. I did my best to thin out the plants and literally removed a bucket load, even after this intervention the tank is still overgrown. 😆

Removed plant mass.

Including this 550mm bad boy.

How the tank looks now.
20240304_183244.jpg

The Tangerine tigers seem to be multiplying and managed to get a crappy pic of a tiny shrimplet, about 6mm in length.

Removing some of the larger echinodorus leaves should hopefully allow a bit more light to penetrate to the lower levels of the tank, here we have a cryptocoryne nurii rosen maiden that's been overshadowed and devoid of light, not in the best of health, but like Victor Frankenstein proclaimed "it's alive"
20240304_185506.jpg

Last but not least is the echinodorus stalk. Its made the surface but not broke it, instead the stalk is charting a course along the surface, probably 1200mm long at present. No idea if it will produce any plantlets at this stage, maybe it needs a tickle 🤔

Enjoy your evening peeps.

"Patience is a virtue"

So I ventured down the path of tissue culture plants, my first and probably last attempt with this form of flora supply. Why? Well I don't have the patience of a Saint, I have fat fingers and trying to plant tc stems in gravel isn't the easiest of operations 😀

The pot.
20240310_094310.jpg

All healthy and longing to be set free. Spent about 30mins trying to split them into individual stems, I take my hat off to anybody that plants out a tank solely with these pots.
Here's what I got after half an hour, about 10% of the total contents, would have taken me all day to split the full tub.

Next up planting in gravel.
Tried to be a pro Scaper and use tweezers, that didn't work, mind you I can't use chopsticks either. Ended up bunching 4~ 5 stems together and used the fingers in gravel, deposit plants, back scoop gravel around plants technique.

Stems in position.

Surprisingly no floaters as of yet.

So now all I need to do is sit back and wait for them to melt.

Hi John, could we get a list of all the fish in the tanks? I’m very interested to see what you have in each tank. I just got a group of dicrossus filamentosus, and saw you had some

Nah! they are going to be fine... you will have to trim them in no time!
Cheers mate, let's hope they take.

Hi John, could we get a list of all the fish in the tanks?
Sure, a rather eclectic mix.

Overgrown jungle:
Kryptopterus vitreolus ×4
Laetacara araguaiae ×1
Melanotaenia praecox ×4
Trichopsis pumila ×3
Corydoras aeneus ×2
Corydoras adolfoi ×2
Corydoras aeneus albino ×2
Otocinclus ×5
Parotocinclus haroldoi ×2
Otothyropsis Piribebuy (?) ×5
Ancistrus sp (bristlenose) ×1

Stem heavy tank.
Melanotaenia praecox ×3
Melanotaenia boesemani ×1
Anomalochromis thomasi ×1
Dicrossus filamentosus ×3
CW010 (gold laser) ×3
Corydoras sterbai ×4
Unknown Corydoras (the name escapes me atm) ×1
Parotocinclus haroldoi ×1
Otocinclus ×5
Otothyropsis Piribebuy (?) ×4
Ancistrus sp (albino bristlenose) ×1

I think that's the lot.

Looking to balance the numbers in both tanks and possibly add some other dwarf cichlid sp, but not entirely sure what just yet.

Thanks for the reply, maybe some of the more peaceful apistogramma sp.? or some nannacara sp. would be cool

No worries 👍

For some reason I've never really fancied apistogramna sp, no idea why because they are a beautiful fish that would undoubtedly fit my set up.
I have nannacara on my wish list, or rather Ivanacara adoketa, just not sure about the suitability in a community set up. Other one on my hit list for a while is Laetacara dorsigera.

I'm off to Pier aquatics this weekend to hopefully get a trio of Laetacara araguaiae, I also suspect I'll end up peering into the tank of Dicrossus Maculatus (again) and think to myself "can I make this work" 😀

you could put the maculatus in one tank and have the filamentosus in the other..... they are both very peaceful in my experience and would be fine with the fish you have in there, especially in a tank that large with that much cover. dont let me convince you though 😂

Yep, that would be the idea.

In general I'd agree.

However, when I originally got a pair they turned out to be 2 male, both got along until I introduced a couple of females then all hell broke loose. Being of similar size they both decided to adopt the dominant male role.
Unfortunately, in the words of Connor Macleod "There can be only one", hence I now have 3 in the tank.
dont let me convince you though 😂
Lol, I don't need much convincing 🤣
