Hi ElleDee yeah I think the American equivalent would be a Petsmart? It’s generally high price and poor quality with very poor range. We went to Horizon Aquatics to get some hardscape for the other half. It was a very long drive (5 hours) but for a hardscape trip it was well worth it. Never...

Rain water from gravel roof causing problems?

A 100 ppm drift that would be excessive in my opinion. You will have to look at the cumulative change and where you hit the equilibrium: equilibrium_tds = (tds_increase / (wc_percent / 100)) - tds_increase + wc_tds Theoretically speaking, if your starting point is water at 220 ppm and it...

Hi all, Question here, I have a 58l tank currently with 8 neon tetras, 5 endlers 2 honey gouramis and 6 similis corys; the tank is plagued with loads of endler fry (which suprisingly haven't been eaten!!). Are green neons too snazzy? They are subtler than neons/cardinals, slightly below mid water, a little lurky through the plants but nice shoaling in a big group, quite similar to the lamb chops, maybe a little more chill wont cause anyone any trouble.

I’m hoping for help in selecting an additional group of fish for my 100 gallon low tech tank. I currently have pearl gouramis that hover near the top of the tank most of the time, harlequin and lamb chop rasboras that mostly stay in a huddle in the left middle, and bronze cories that are all...

    Warm Water Fish?

Yes, my “not worth the risk” is that you cannot quarantine for everything, and tho pecs are relatively resilient it’s not a risk I would take. You then have the follow up punch, that eggs and fry are not that big, and would be food. Finally, I think to do right by these fish you should have...

Rain water from gravel roof causing problems?

Sure thing - just pointing it out to make people aware that with cheap wide-range meters at the very low range, you are mostly measuring around the noise floor. I am sort of a TDS aficionado :) For tank measurements, far above the noise floor, it's such a great tool to establish a datum and...

Rain water from gravel roof causing problems?

True, but whether it is 3 or 4 or 5 ppm it is still very much in the clean water range and suitable for using in his tank. I guess a good way to test the meter through the whole range would be to start with the test solution at 2000 and dilute it 50/50 with rainwater, test again and...

Rain water from gravel roof causing problems?

Well it is of more interest what it measures in the tank. In the range of my tap water (220) and my tank (currently 365) it is quite reproduceable in what it measures. So it gives me some indication of the tank status. This TDS stuff is al quite new to me but it gives me a feeling that you have...
  57. MichaelJ

Rain water from gravel roof causing problems?

Sure. However, cheap wide-range TDS meters tend to be off at the very low range. Unless it's a higher end lab grade device such as Hanna instruments optimized for low-range, I wouldn't really trust a reading much below say 5-10 ppm. Cheers, Michael
  58. Sanniejop

Rain water from gravel roof causing problems?

Yes. The last ICP report shows 44 mg/L Ca. With 50/50% waterchance I add 22 mg/L which I assume is more than enough. Mg is only 5 mg/L. So I have to add some Epsom salt. Next time I will adjust this amount to total Ca:Mg ratio of 3:1.

If you take a jug of pH 7.0 water out of the tank and let it sit for at least 24 hours, what value does it stabilise at? This value would be where you need to measure your pH drop from, not water straight from the tank. Of course it might also be 7.0, but more likely it will be a little higher.
