I didn't mean to be the voice of doom regarding your tank, in all honesty I'd probably have done the same as you. I'm so glad all the otos have reappeared, they're one of my favourites!

I’ve just done a 95% water change and added a capatta leaf - some clearer pics of my tank post water change. I will pick up some more plants. I do still have all 12 otos thankfully - they were hiding in the plants at the back whereas normally I see them all about so that concerns me too. Fingers...

Finally I've managed to keep my rotala wallichii alive! using HCL to bring the DKH down to 1.5 helped a lot. Your page about using HCL was really useful @Andy Pierce 👍 Will post photos after few weeks! I must mention that I've started dosing DTPA Fe on top of EDTA while adding HCL, so probably...

    Sterilising plants

Maybe "sterilising" is too strong a word, I simply want to eliminate the possibility of snails/snail eggs/algae. Most websites are dot com, so I presume they talk about U.S gallons, which for the recommended dosage means the mix is stronger than it would be with imperial gallons. What they...

One strong powerfull light in the middle or multiple less powerfull lights spread over the surface?

I asked my suplier to make a picture of the light speading at a distance of 15 cm. It looks about 40 cm wide. I'm hoping that the internal reflection (at a certain angle, about 45 degree, the light will not go out of the aquarium but reflects inside) will provide enough light for lighting up the...

It will work fine straight out of the box, but nice to know you have the option in the future. Let us know how you get on. If you get the new filter run it along with the old one for a while until it is established. To kick start the foam on the new filter you could rinse the foam of the old...

    Sterilising plants

If you want ”sterile” plants you’ll need to get the 1-2 grow pots, most places sell them. I cannot recommend a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution to clean a plant - it does too much harm to the plant itself. You going to dip your arm in this solution before you do any tank maintenance? Sorry...

I havent done this method myself, but there is some logic behind it when everything else fails. We have all been there. It was not deliberate, and the fact you are on here shows your commitment to care. Try not to beat yourself up too much.

I meant something like this where you could run the top part of the filter as a powerhead atop a tube and a block of foam (I think they are out of stock, it is just for visualising the idea): HMF Biological Sponge Block Filter for Power Head 10x10x30cm - Envobee Shrimp . 29. G

White spot and temperature for corys

@Bradders I think I’m going to give a large water change a go. At this point it’s worth giving it a go I’d say, in the hopes it reduces the bad bacteria. The fish don’t have any sign of epistylis now and I’d rather get the bad bacteria out than leave the medicine in (I think). Or I may think on...

    First tank

I don't see why not. The tank is fairly small and well planted. The carbon and snake oil in the cartridges of the original filter are not needed and may even be detrimental in some situations. If you are so inclined you can probably even mod it to get rid of the casing over the foam and use a...

    Which substrate

Hi all, If it does? It is your ammonia source - <"Aquarium Soil - a perfect, complete bottom layer for aquariums - Tropica Aquarium Plants">. It isn't a product I've ever used. If it is an ammonia source? I would want to deplete those ammonia levels as rapidly as possible. cheers Darrel
  33. Bradders

    Which substrate

Won't my Tropica Aqua Soil released Ammonia during the first couple of weeks?
  34. dw1305

    Which substrate

Hi all, It is more likely to be an issue with the test kits, rather than a genuine reading. You don't have an ammonium (NH4) source, and during microbial nitrification your fixed nitrogen ion goes from <"NH3/4 > N02- > N03-">, or possibly directly from NH3/4 > N03- via <"COMAMMOX Nitrospira">...

White spot and temperature for corys

Well, sadly, we were unable to help before more deaths. So don't thank me! I am gutted. Funny you should mention that. The other manual way what some people (I have not done this first hand) have done is very frequent 95% water changes (daily) to reduce the bacterial load. Bacteria multiply...

White spot and temperature for corys

Yes absolutely. I think I’m just going to have to keep an eye on it and follow through with the rest of the fungal treatment as that has been effective. I could try and move my ottos to my shrimp tank but as you say, it’s hard to know which fish are affected and also my shrimp tank is only...
  39. Maf 2500

    First tank

Totally agree with the above. Foam is an excellent media for bio-filtration which in combo with the substrate and plants in the tank is more than adequate. The cartridges that come with your original filter are borderline useless tat that is designed to block up after a certain amount of use...
  40. Bradders

White spot and temperature for corys

They are all fine, and even slight deviations from these will not cause the rapid deaths we have seen. What I suspect is that this is treating the secondary infections we have witnessed. Not the bacterial side of things that I suspect could also be the primary. It is very sad and frustrating...
  41. G

White spot and temperature for corys

@Bradders I agree with you that it’s likely a bacterial issue. I wish I had bought a good filter at the start instead of that awful swell one. I am between a rock and a hard place because my months old filter in my shrimp tank was really helping (I think) but I don’t want to risk my shrimp...

  45. Bradders

White spot and temperature for corys

My thought process here is that we have a bacterial disease within the fish with a secondary disease like epistylis. Oase Biomaster Pro 2 - Comming Soon

Darrel got it right here; you do not need a filter in a planted tank but only if you do not have livestock, livestock and the feeding of which is a nightmare to balance. The more you feed the harder it becomes. Fish poop isn’t the issue as far as I can tell, it’s the food that doesn’t get eaten...

This is the only filter I have found that would fit with a higher flow rate but as I mention, it only has room for one sponge; https://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/products/600lh-600if This is why I’m wondering if adding another filter (same as the one currently in the tank) would be the best...

Do these help. The filter currently has some black sponge (3.5x4.5x7cm) and two of these basket type things. I cut the hood to accommodate the led strip as the two in the hood aren’t that bright. I cut the corner so that I could easily remove the filter - it’s quite a poor design really.

Thank you. I’m just a bit wary of the filtration/flow as, for example, the poop from the hitchhiker snails (man, they produce a lot!) is sitting on the leaves of plants because of no flow down there. I guess I could remove some of the snails (which are mostly bladder, apart from one assassin...
