3 month update
I thought I would post a quick update to show people how this aquarium has progressed over the last three months. Overall this tank has done very well and the plants have grown in nicely.
I added some hygrophila pinnatifida later on. I love this plant and have been encouraging...
They are referring to the flow rate listed on the filter. I think you'll find the actual flow rate is significantly less (approximately half what is advertised) when the filter is filled up.

Have a look on Ebay, there is a seller selling brand new chihiros lights. Not if they have exactly the model you're after. Otherwise you can buy them on Aliexpress - with long shipping time and likely customs charges.

Thanks. It looks very nice, a lot like manzanita. The outer layer has started to decompose so I'm going scrape it off. Hopefully the gamble pays off

I've been foraging for dead branches in a local woodland and have come across what I thought (correct me if I'm wrong) is an oak tree with some cut branches. There were some dead branches beneath it. Do these look like dead oak branches to you? I've read that oak is an excellent choice for...

I think it could benefit from one or two larger pieces of wood. A larger piece of wood and fewer small pieces will make for a more impactful scape imo. Lots of smaller pieces can be distracting and won't create the drama of a larger piece. You may even want some of the wood protruding, which...
Careful not to run your lighting too bright if you’re not currently running CO2
That is an extremely powerful light you have!

No experience with that specific model but I can say that I am very pleased with the smaller LED they make (asta 20). Are they as good as kessils? I highly doubt it, but I think they are much better value.

You are right that the soil may leach ammonia and nutrients that would normally boost the plant grow at the start after planting. Though I don’t suspect the soil’s nutrients would be noticeable depleted in a few weeks with not plants up-taking them. Large water changes may be a good idea...
I think dragon stone or lava rock are the least dense rocks if you want something lighter than what you already have.

I think that is the general advice. Helps to reduce organics and so prevent algae when you start the tank especially if you have high lighting - high tech. If your tank is low tech then I think it is less necessary/appropriate

Scape looks great! [emoji106] The sloped substrate looks about right. It should be quite deep at the back.
My only suggestion would be that the hardscape, particularly the wood, seems slightly too small for the tank.
Following along...
