Remineralising Agent for RO Water

Hi all,
To get 2dKH i need add bout 3,5g potassium bicarbonate to this, it's another 27ppm.
I must admit that was more of a potassium (K) addition than I was expecting, but I can see that the calculation is right.

It wouldn't offer you any control but could use <"Oyster or Cockle shell chick grit">, it is very cheap or you might be able to PYO shells?

cheers Darrel

Im not sure they are adding them intentionally though John.
Hi Gareth (@Wookii)

I agree with the comments you have made. So, I also share some of your skepticism. In the previous formulation of Re-Mineral Tropic (RMT), Tropic Marin included chloride. If I remember rightly, this reduces nitrite toxicity to fish. I'm not sure if the fluoride replaced chloride in the latest (2020) re-formulation. One thing that I like about Tropic Marin as a company is that I can have useful scientific discussions with them. Without the sales pitch. Although they will not divulge the exact formulation of their products, they will provide ratios of some electrolytes/minerals.

Hi All,

are you able to let me know what mix you would use to remineralise a planless tank. I did have plants but, my sevs have destroyed all of them so, I am going plantless, for now...

my tank is 400L and I have used equilibrium before but, it's expensive.

Reading posts like this I can understand why commercial remineralisation products are so popular.
I have the dry chemicals for this recipe but don’t know exactly how/how often to use it. I also only want to make up enough for for a 60L and a 37L.

As with many things in this hobby its as easy or difficult as we want to make it.

In very simple terms, get some Calcium Chloride, and some Magnesium Sulphate. Adding 1g of each per 15 litres of RO water change water will net you roughly 4dGH remineralisation (at 3:1 Ca:Mg).

From that you can scale to whatever GH target, or water change volume you want.

<"Lick your little finger">, put it in the "Epsom Salts", up to the first joint, wash off in the tank water. Then tip a small amount of calcium chloride into your palm, (think "salty chips") and throw it in the tank (but it has to be over your shoulder).

That one, but it takes all the fun out of it. If you want to add some dKH as well? - <"James' Planted Tank - Re-mineralising RO Water">
1.8g KHCO3 in 25 litres of water = 2 dKH
1.2g K2CO3 in 25 litres of water = 2 dKH
