Remanso . . .

Still haven’t managed a decent FTS @bazz so hopefully some of the emersed pots for @hydrophyte will suffice until I do . . .

Growth is really taking off and the pots are putting out both emersed and submerged growth:

Even the Super Red that I thought was a goner as it had turned to a dry crisp, has put out several stems, but it is the Verticillata that’s going mad both above and below water.

Trying to capture an image of both above and below water growth is interesting (inspired somewhat by the image in my opening post of this thread) - not as good as in person, but you get the idea . . .

The behaviour of the shrimp in this tank has been really interesting. When I added them all to the tank initially they all stayed firmly nailed to the substrate, not venturing any higher. The Tangerines, as I mentioned before, completely hid for a week - I thought they were all dead - and slowly started to show themselves.

Now, several weeks later and all the shrimp are out and about, buzzing all over the place and free swimming in the water column - it looks like a real hive of activity now.

I’ve also spotted at least two berried females Tangerines, and several of the Black Rose’s look to be heavily saddled (though you can’t see eggs due to their dark colouration), which is a great result:

So fingers crossed there’ll be a flood of shrimplets soon- then once they are above mouth size, I can finally start adding fish!

Coming on nicely @Wookii - great looking tank, love the transition between submerged and emersed growth and looks like you’ve sorted out that hair algae

Thanks Steve - the hair algae isn't 100% sorted yet, but its declined significantly. Some patches I've intentionally not touched so I can monitor its growth or decline, and they are gradually reducing each week on their own. I think it's also now helping that the shrimp and snails are covering all areas of the tank, and likely eating those microscopic bits of algae growth I can't even see yet, before it ever gets chance to become an issue.

I've also seen the largest female Amano chowing down on some of the larger algae strands too, which is good now, but does make me fear a little for some of my mosses later on, particularly the Miroshaki which I've caught them eating in another tank in the past.

Touch! The fish from there are always in top condition so they should be well fed and acclimatised to captive life already.

Good to know after my disastrous experience with Abyss!

They couldn't help me out with any of the other rarer fish on my list unfortunately, though did say they might be able to get some Pangio cuneovirgata as an alternative to the Pangio alternans.

The Corydoras (Aspidoras) pauciradiatus is proving impossible to source - a place in Dudley (Sedgley Aquatics) had some last year, but they didn't have any currently, and haven't been able to source any since. I may have to resign myself to just having some more Habrosus.

It's a long shot but one of the forum sponsors @FinestAquatics had some in stock last April, maybe they could source them again?

Thanks John - I did see that, and have emailed them, but that list is from 2022 so who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️

Wildwoods have got back to me and said they should be able to get them too 👍🏻

Pier shipped 9x Cocama to me in the end, each in individual bags, really well packed.

They are very beautiful, chunky and healthy fish, and are settling in well. It’s nice to see a few of them swimming around in a shoal:

Looks like it could explode at any given minute! 🙂

Lol Yeah, that is one of the tubbier ones - but I think its fairly common for some to be like that judging from the videos I've seen whilst researching them, and they all have fairly rounded bellies - though me overdoing the Bug-Bites is also a possibility too - it's hard to judge quantities when you have shrimp swarming on the food, and don't see the fish feed.

Not sure if this qualifies for the worlds smallest Echinodorus . . .

This is an Echinodorus Purpurea I had in my old tank before moving house. It originally looked like this:

c74b0d38-0bda-40b5-8460-495bd4230fda-jpeg.jpg

But it got stuffed at the back of a holding tank for the last year, floating and unplanted, and gradually declined to the point that when I pulled it out a couple of weeks ago from a tangled mass of Bolbitis, it was little more than a rooted stump with a couple of rotting leaves remaining.

As the roots and main rosette still looked healthy, I decided to trim the roots down, pull off the remaining leaves, and stick it in the sand to see what happened.

. . . . and where there was death, now there is life - new leaves at about 20mm long:

More exciting news on the fish front. I'd almost given up on finding some of the species I wanted to stock after trying numerous stores, and then Wildwoods Enfield came up mega-trumps!

Keith the fish room manager came back to me and confirmed that they had Borneo Kuhli loaches (Pangio alternans) in stock (rarer than hens teeth) - they only had 10x left, but he said they also had about 10x Pangio cuneovirgata in the same tank with them! So I've taken the lot!

He also has 30x of the Reed Tetra (Hyphessobrycon elachys) in stock too, so it made sense to have those as well, even though I was planning to wait until the first round of shrimp births. They're all arriving Friday along with 25x Chilli Rasbora (Boraras brigittae) from Abyss (using up my credit note with them)!

Over the weekend I'll also move over my existing stock from the year long holding tank and close it down - about 6 mature Chilli's, 8-10x Habrosus Cory's (with babies that have appeared in the last week), 6x Pygmy Cory's and a couple of remaining Ember Tetras (both species of which we've had for over three and a half years now), and one lone male Endler that's now getting on for 3 years with us too!

Keith also advised that his supplier in Germany has stock of the Six ray Cory's (Corydoras (Aspidoras) pauciradiatus), so those will be here in 4-5 weeks along with the Threadfin Rainbows (Iriatherina werneri) which they are receiving this week, and will QT for me until the Cory's are ready to ship!

Final ones to move over will be 8x of the Chocolate Gourami juveniles that bred in my tank 18months or so ago - they're proper baby shrimp hunters, so I'll move them only when I'm happy that the shrimp are breeding well to sustain the predation.

Once they've all settled, I'll see what the stocking levels look like, and if things aren't too busy, then I might consider adding a small shoal of one of the following:

Tucano Tetra (Tucanoichthys tucano)
Ruby Tetra (Axelrodia riesei)
Hummingbird Tetra (Trochilocharax ornatus)
Dwarf Pencilfish (Nannostomus Marginatus)

Haven't decided which, so any thoughts welcome!

CO2 delivery:

I have to admit that when I bought this JD Aquatec reactor, I didn't really have very high hopes for it. It's impossibly small for its rated volume (not my pic):

1645087598140-png.png

However I've been pleasantly surprised - it's reaching my target of around 15ppm on this 550 litre volume easily with less that 1.5bpm which is no mean feat. I am getting some bubbles coming out of the CO2 loop into the sump, even with the bypass fully open, so I assume I've over specified the Eheim CompactOn 1000 (I had assumed too much in losses from the loop), and need to scale back to a smaller 600lph one for even more efficient CO2 use.
Have you got more information about this? and where you got it?

Hey Paulo - they're made by a German company called JDAquatec - you can find their website here: JDAquatec - STARTSEITE - I think they're a 'cottage industry' one man band type affair.

I bought the reactor just by contacting the owner Jörg Düren through the website. I think he only speaks German, and I don't speak German, so I think our e-mail exchange was entirely with the aid of copy and pastes from Google Translate! But it worked out fine.

There is some more technical detail on the reactor where we were discussing it in your thread (Page 11):

CO2 Reactor UK sellers?

And another user here who didn't feel it measured up (though I think pairing with the right pump and balancing the bypass has a big influence on its efficiency):

Feel free to fire any questions at me and I'll try and answer them 👍

Many thanks and totally missed it! I will do some reading 🙂
