I have one of these in the loft in case we get advanced notice of an interruption of supply. No idea if it’s any safer than the other plastic water containers I have in various sizes I use for the fish tanks?
As said, just keep it in a dark place or use a black container. My rainwater often has a pretty *low TDS but it will still go green if it’s not stored carefully.
* I collected some overflow direct from the shed gutter during a heavy downpour and the TDS was around 2-3.
Can you collect rainwater? I have a couple of 210L water butts, one of which is used exclusively for use in my two Nano’s. I mix it with tap water when needed.
I’m impressed with the Purigen packaging. The resin came sealed in a hard plastic mesh bag that seems very durable. I bought a pack of two so I have one in each filter for my two Nano’s.
I used to use carbon in one of my tanks to remove the tannins but it only seems to be effective for three or four weeks. The small bags of Purigen are surprisingly effective and last for months before needing regeneration.
I soaked a piece of wood in a trug outside for quite a few weeks before using it in one of my tanks. Many months later it still colours the water so I’m now using Purigen to keep the water clear.
Both tanks have bogwood with moss growing on them. I only have a lid on the 60L to stop any Corydoras jumping out. The lights on both tanks are just cheap generic LED units from Amazon. According to my purchase history the one on the 60L is a
Chihiros A Series Aquarium LED Lighting with...
I’m a big fan of the Dennerle Nano tanks. The rounded corners look nice and are easy to clean. This is my 60L on the left. The other is a 37L Eheim. I’ve also found that shrimp do a great job of keeping the tank clean and can be added quite quickly.
I only buy pre packaged plants from Tropica. I have their catalogue so I should look it up. I have a similar, but not the same type of plant in my other Nano.
Before and after. I only have a few easy to grow plants in my two Nano’s and the little 37L was well overdue for a trim. No idea what the plant is on the left but it’s growing really well and is sending out lots of runners. Now it has a bit more light maybe it will grow even faster.
I’m running a 350 on a 60L with steel pipes and I haven’t experienced any problems. I have a couple of trays of loaded with foam, a couple of bio media and a bag of carbon.
As it’s only a small tank is there any way you can collect rainwater for it? After Darrels helpful suggestion that’s what I’ve mostly been using in my 60L and 37L Nano’s. Depending how much tap water I add I can get a little limescale but not much and it’s easily removed. My Corydoras, shrimps...
Two Canisters for the Nano’s, an Air pump and the electrics pretty much fill up the cabinet. The two drawers have food and others bits and pieces. Filters spares, connectors, media etc live in a 42L really useful box in the hall cupboard.
I do wonder why there don’t seem to be more Green coloured ones about. Given how madly the plants grow in my tank they’d be almost invisible in some instances.
I’ve started using Black silicone airline in my takes. I now prefer it to the clear stuff. I have seen grey which looks quite nice but not been able to source it at a reasonable price.
I never used to be able to grow plants years ago but these two tanks are getting to be a bit of a chore having to keep trimming them! I put another Tropica plant I bought from Pets at Home in the 37L and it’s about doubled in size in a couple of months. It looked a bit pale when I put it in...
My advice is don’t! I used to trim moss with scissors and it not only looked unnatural but it took an age scooping up all the little bits of moss.
I now tear small pieces at a time off until I get the look I want.
I use S shape scissors for all the other plants though.
I have to trim this stuff on a regular basis. This is yesterday’s trimmings. There’s actually a lot more in the bucket than the stuff in the tray that’s going back in the tank. I use very little ferts and not very often, is it Corydoras poo making them grow so well?!
Actually it may only need to be 45cm high for the look I’m after. My 60L Nano is 43cm high and it’s only 5mm glass.
Anyone know if you can get mitred corner tanks in the UK?
I have a few Nano’s and what particularly attracted me to the Dennerle and Eheim ones were the rounded front corners. It’s a shame you can’t get much bigger tanks with this feature. I suspect it’s not quite so easy to bend 8mm or even 10mm glass accurately.
Given that limitation I’d go with...
We keep all our windows shut during the day to keep the heat out and only open them early in the morning or later in the evening to let the cooler air in. Closing curtains in south facing rooms also helps keep the heat out.
It seems extremely difficult to find unbiased opinion on the health effects of using artificially softened water. 99% of the “information” seems to come from companies that manufacturer, supply and fit water softeners. Not surprisingly they say it’s perfectly safe! I therefore though It quite...
I’ve heard Tap water quality in parts of the USA is dreadful. Whether it’s actually bad for your health or just makes you want to be sick is another matter! :) Weren’t some folks able to set light to the tap in fracking areas? !
I was under the impression that here in the UK the installer was obliged to provide a direct water pipe for drinking and cooking purposes? I guess I was wrong. Perhaps it should be a legal requirement? Obviously Germany have their own rules but forcing residents to use only artificially softened...
As a point of interest, I use rainwater in my 60L and 37L most of the time but for quick top ups I sometimes use tap and Zero filtered water. The water in my area is quite hard so I don’t like to use tap on its own or I’ll get unwanted deposits on the glass and hardware. Fish and Shrimps seem...
I removed the media container from my 2213 as well. I have some coarse, medium and a fine foam in the bottom and then a home made basket containing Sera Siporax on top. Unlike the original setup, bypass is much less likely. What I have found though is that detritus seems to be forced through the...
The only thing that concerned me with the 106/7 when I was looking for a new filter was the risk of bypass. A guy on YouTube says they’re not known for it though?
I can’t see anything there that should effect the flow from the Eheim too badly. The Fluval has a completely different arrangement inside so it will be interesting to see how you get on.
I’ve got a Tetratec EX400 on a 37L which works ok but the flow does suffer as the sponge pre-filter I fitted...
I can’t help but if you do change it would be very interesting to hear your thoughts after running the 107 for a while.
As a point of interest what type of inlet/outlet and media are you using in the 2213?
The valve nearest the thermostat as you say doesn’t have a TRV. It should though have a normal valve for balancing the system so you should be able to turn it down. The adjuster is normally under a small plastic cap.
One thing I’ve noticed with stainless steel pipes is that as they block the light completely you don’t seem to get algae or other stuff growing in them like the plastic ones. Mine just get a quick wipe outside now and again.
Looking good!
I was wondering how you’re going to balance the CO2 injection? If it’s set too high, even slightly, won’t it eventually fill up most of the canister with CO2?
The inlet pipe could enter the top of the canister and go down to the bottom. This is pretty much what most modern external filters do anyway. They use “tubes” built into the media trays to do it but that’s not the only way I’m sure.
With some thought it may not be too difficult to put both inlet and outlet connectors on the top* of the filter like the vast majority of externals on the market. Actually, even placing just one on the side like the ADA and Eheim Classic would make things a bit easier. There are other solutions...
I don’t know what make mine are but they look very similar to your picture. I’ve had no problems at all on my freshwater Nano.
My set was £33 on eBay and came from Ireland I think?
I’ve actually been thinking about this recently. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have a foam filter insert with a hollowed out space in it for biological media?
I actually made them myself some years back. Sadly one of my cats knocked the bowl containing the spares off the cupboard so I’ve only got a couple now.

Another random thought!? Many filters rely on the water flow to expel trapped air - rocking the filter whilst it’s running aids this. I’m not sure what problems you may encounter if the water flow is out of the bottom of your filter?
I also wonder if sharp bends will accumulate the inevitable build up of dirt quicker, particularly in those tight corners? Cleaning them would also be much harder. From past experience the gentle sweep of the Eheim bends are easily cleaned with a hose brush.
Some more thoughts. It’s a lot...
Having right angle connectors for the inlet/outlet hoses can seriously affect the flow. If you look at the Eheim classic and ADA filters the bottom hose connector has a nice sweeping curve to it. You can buy the Eheim part as a spare so no reason not to use it? A straight connector on the top of...
I just find the growth in both tanks amazing considering I only have a sand substrate and just put a squirt of liquid ferts in once every few weeks.
The shrimps also do a great job of helping to keep the tanks clean.
That’s just for the shrimp/fish and only in one of the tanks. Maybe it makes a difference, I don’t know.
Couple of pictures of the 37L with the moss growing out of the top. The tank needs a good trim soon.
Both tanks have a single tall piece of bog wood in them. The plants in the 60L tank have just gone a bit mad though and grown very tall. The smaller 37L tank just has lots of moss growing on the wood, it’s now coming out of the top of the tank. I’ll take another picture later.
I don’t know what this stuff is, I bought it at Pets at Home, but it’s taken over the tank. I keep having to trim it. And I only put a shot of Tropica in every month or so! It’s the 60L on the left.
These work quite well.

Since Darrel put me on to using rain water (with some tap) though I get less trouble from deposits. Thanks again Darrel!
Something like this?

I keep loose fitting lids on at night in case the cats get interested. Open top during the day though and I keep the level about 20mm from the rim. I did have it higher but I noticed I had a “leak”, capillary action was drawing water out of the tank via one of the clips that support the cover...
Just a thought but if the biological load has been split equally between internal and external then you may have lost 50% of your biological filtration? This isn’t to say the internal may eventually be able to cope though. Just wondering what may happen in the meantime?
Are they safe to put in an aquarium? I have an oak tree in my garden and a few years back I took some leaves off while they were still green and dried them to put into a hedgehog box. They remained green once dried and looked nice so wondering if I could do the same for my aquarium. I don’t...
I had a similar problem and had to remove Anubias regularly for cleaning. I then got some shrimp and they seem to have got rid of it. They also did the same with Algae on the bogwood.
I’ve used super glue as well but stick my Anubias to small pebbles. This is enough to keep them in place and you can move them where you want at any time.
I should have taken pictures of the old stuff because the leaves were clearly eaten away. The stuff pictured is fresh from the shop, not sure why they’re not floating fully yet but they’re lovely and green and in good condition.
The Salvinia has never grown that well in one of my tanks, a 37L Nano. I have had something of an explosion in the numbers of shrimp in my tank and they’ve taken a liking to eating it so I’ve just removed the skeletons of the last of it and introduced some more. This morning I came down and...
Thanks to Darrel I’ve been running my 37L Nano almost exclusively on rainwater. I filter it through paper towel into a storage can before use in the tank. Living in a hard water area it’s great not having to keep scraping limescale off the glass and equipment.
That’s interesting. We do suffer with damp and are currently using a dehumidifier. We had a Mitsubishi but that failed after about four years so we’re now using a Ruby Dry. Do you use a PIV? I didn’t realise that they were so reasonably priced. Just wondering how effective they really are and...
