Have a look at turbo filter 500.
Can be used in different configurations.
Powerhead,cannister,cannister with sponge..or just sponge.
Comes with a little duck bill attachment and an optional venturi.
£25
Got into test match cricket as a child, whilst laying on the sofa recovering from chicken pox.
Only 3 TV stations,in those days.
Been an avid TMS follower, ever since.
just remove it,whenever you see it.
You don't have to do a full blown water change,everytime..just enough to eradicate all visible BGA.
dig down, into the substrate,a little bit...it loves to hide there.
Whole heartedly agree.
Never had any problems with filters,in the 35 years I've been keeping fish..but the biomaster 600t,trumps anything I've had,in the past.
The ease of maintenance, plus the inbuilt heater are 2 features I could no longer be without.
I was thinking the filter may have been impeded.
Been adding high doses of glut?
Hydrogen peroxide?
Could be the filter not coping with extra ammonia released by rescapes.
Otto need very clean water.
You grow a healthy sword(low tech)and then give it a bit of gas.
The difference is obvious.
If you're aiming for"just enough"i would set the tank up as a low tech...the extra co2 being a booster.
I was thinking more about what happens in the natural habitat.
Wonder what the co2 profile would be any plant....let's say blyxa...where it occurs naturally.
My plants are"awake"long before my photo period starts....but there's no co2!
This wouldn't happen naturally.
Those early risers would get first dibs on the co2 that had accumulated during darkness.
I received some blyxa from amazon, yesterday.
It's not enjoyed the journey, but looked like they were good healthy specimens when picked.
Got loads of it for £9.
From a company called Lincolnshire pond plants.
Probably better off going direct..for a quicker delivery.
I've had bogwood disintegrate,before.
When you pull it out..it smells like the rancid silt from the bottom of a silty lake/pond.
Obvious algae magnet.
Better off placed in the garden for woodlice to live in.
Was going to do a before and after vid, just so I could compare..and see if it made a difference.
No need..it was obvious.
Now have to switch it off during maintenance..or I get wet!
Just removed all the sponge from inside my 600t.
Unbranded pumice type media in all trays, with top tray empty.
Standard pre filter
Now that's serious flow!
Regarding flow patterns
Sent across the front length of the tank,by the time it's bounced off the far end..forced down..and then back across the rear.
There's only enough to gently rock my stems.
That's a 600 biomaster coupled with a powerhead of similar output,in a 1 metre long...
Yes,certainly.
Watching my fish,as we speak(lights off)..in well over 10 times(stated)flow.
Probably nearer 20x
Just milling around in the tops of the stems.
I used to get this when the supplied sponge was new or cleaned.
Also found the supplied sponge disintegrates fairly quickly, when using co2.
I swapped it out,for a piece of medium density sponge I had lying about..which solved the issue.
Food being sucked in,will lure critters..so I always switch...
Hiya.
I run my 900s as follows
30 min ramp up to 45%
6 hrs at 45%
30 min ramp down to 3%
1 hr at 3%
lights off
Do inject a bit of gas though..nowhere near 30 ppm.
I changed the pre filter for a coarser sponge, and tbh, didn't notice any difference.
However...with the standard sponges, flow would drop off much sooner,so would need cleaning more often.
Upside was,the main canister stayed cleaner for longer..which is the reason for having a pre filter in the...
I've used them before.
Bloke said I could have as many as I wanted for free.
Went round the back of his house..and his garden was piled high with them.
Use in date ones,now though.
£10 swap and drop.
There was a good journal on here,a few years ago,by a member called pinkmummylady.
This may be of use to the op.
Maybe someone(more tech savvy)could provide a link.
I'm running my 900s at 50% for 6 hours a day with a 30 min ramp up/down..and an hour"sunset"
Am using co2..but nowhere near 30ppm.
Standard dose of tnc complete.
All easy plants
Algae free and low maintenance.
I've got a dodgy socket in the house.
It's ok if nobody touches it..but somebody touched it.
Bought another light..swapped the transformer over, then somebody touched it again.
Tbh..I don't rate them.
The tank looked yellow.
I've actually got 2(No transformers)and both are going in the skip, next time I go to the tip.
You're quite welcome to try one
CBA with posting
I've had similar, were I've cut a couple of pieces of metal to fit tight across the width.
That was only to rest tubes on...though.
Not sure I'd fancy doing it with a twinstar, unless there was an inner lid.
Does your tank have internal bracing or an inner lid?
If so,you could get the pendant version of twinstar..and just rest it on top.
That's what I had to do with my tank.
Although tbh...I don't think you'll need the pre filter mod,as long as you don't pack the internal trays.
I'll certainly be trying the standard sponges..Next time I clean the pre filter
I replaced the pre filter sponges with ones I made from the coarse sponges, that are supplied in the main filter body.
This left one intact, which remains in the bottom tray.
Next 3 trays are 50% full of an unbranded pumice type media.
Next tray is the supplied medium sponge.
Last tray is a bag of...
I have the 600,and am really pleased with it.
Don't know if it's the updated version or not.
Also have a fluval 406 and 305..both of them have been faultless too.
In my experience,it's the cheaper generic"bogwood"type, that are worse.
Usually stored out side in great big piles;)
Does subside though..with regular scrubbing.
Pita,if it's not easily removed.
As you say..probably the wood, leaching organics.
I have 3 large pieces of wood in my new set up.
One has to be scrubbed weekly, while the other 2,remain clean.
Don't think lowering the light will help.
I'll feed flake and pellets..but nothing is taken with as much enthusiasm as bloodworm and crushed peas.
Permanently hang a piece of red pepper on the side, until it's consumed.
I prefer in tank.
Especially like the neo diffuser because there's no need for a separate bubble counter.
Can't risk an inline failing, whilst I'm away..and flooding the house.
