rams

Hi all,
I've bred them in the past, the most difficult thing is usually getting stock. The ones they have in MA etc. are mass produced in Singapore etc and they are hormone treated to make them more colourful and saleable. This unfortunately nearly always makes them sterile. I'd try "Aquarists Classified" or the "BCA forum" for a source.

If you can get a pair (they are sexable by the spangling in the black mark on the flank) or some juveniles to grow out, it should be fairly straight forward. They need warm, soft clean water, and lots of live food. They will spawn in the open, either in a pit (or on a shard of pottery) and they are absolutely useless parents, so they are best without any other fish in the tank. The water they come from is pretty plant free, but you get better fry survival with some leaf litter and plants (especially moss). Have a look here for more details: <http://dwarfcichlid.com/Breeding_Blue_Rams.php> and this for Apistogramma etc generally <http://dwarfcichlid.com/Aquarium_care.php>.

cheers Darrel
