Hi all,

A foam seems to work better for me. It needs regular cleaning but also reduces filter maintenance.

I've gone to using bigger and <"bigger blocks of relatively coarse foam">. The other advantage is that I can use the same blocks on powerheads etc.

Because my filters sit at just below tank level (like the Eheim Ecco below), I don't have much effect of gravity to feed the tank water into the filter, so any constriction is likely to lead to problems with air in the filter etc.

The downside is <"they aren't easy to hide">.

The plugs, the plugs...what an honest photo to show the reality of a planted tank enthusiasts spaghetti junction. I had an electrician install 5 sockets operating from a timer for lights and a solenoid but he misunderstood my other request and only installed two ordinary sockets that are not timer controlled, I wanted two doubles. I ended up with two extension cables held securely out of harms way with hook and eye sticky fabric pads. But even 5 + 4 would have been inadequate for lights, heaters, solenoids, extra filters for flow and I don't even use skimmers or electrolysis. Live and sort of learn.

It isn't great. I think that was probably three filters, two heaters and two sets of lights.
