I really like the Angel fish tank, despite its modest ranking! The arrangement/composition has the look of a tank that realistically could be sustained and the fish are beautiful and caught in a great position in the photograph. The consistency in plant form, strikes me as very impressively coherent. I try to use continuity plants in the garden, in the tank I find that quite quickly a plant which was intended to link or pull the whole perspective together, simply takes over. Probably lack of regular trimming and fine adjustment by me.

Thank you so much!! This was probably my second favourite contest scape I’ve done behind this years’ work despite it having the lowest ranking! I believe my photography skills let this scape down a bit. I only had my camera a few months before shooting this tank and unknowingly I had the compression from the camera to my smartphone set as ‘high’ and so the image quality isn’t what it needs to be for the contest! I realised this only after making the submission to the IAPLC!
My 2023 scape I wanted to recreate a south-east Asian habitat! I however feel everything in the final photo is too fresh and newly planted and the tank lacks maturity! For example, the crypts still have some emersed leaves showing! Being critical, the composition arrangement of this one I also felt was my weakest. Too much white space and no clear end point! I would like to have another go at this style of wood arrangement (I.e hanging and flowing downwards) in the future to try and really do it justice!

Hi Tom! Are all the tanks the same dimensions? Despite the previous entries being really good, the last one shows so much more depth that it's hard to believe it's the same tank. I also think your skills as an aquarium photographer really increased.

Yes, they are all the same tank (90x50x45cm). I guess the first two are more pure nature aquariums! The Iwagumi was more of a hybrid so I decided to create more sense of depth towards the end point.
Thank you for the journal Tom. Haven’t read and digested it all, yet. Really interested in the community aspect in the two part ‘way forward’ bit you shared. (Way forward for UK Aquascaping/contest)
I’ve only just got into this hobby and no where near ready to produce a contest tank. However, I would add to the discussion that in my opinion we don’t create alone. I thanked someone notable this evening as he has inspired me and captivated me by his work, appreciation and artistry. This may sound weird but I’m sure there’s the ‘dna of inspiration’ in many peoples works.
Maybe Mr Amano is still scaping through many? 🙂 blessings, Paul
