Hi to all :)

Glad things are looking better now! I'd keep a careful eye on ammonia and nitrite readings still, to make sure they're at safe levels. Had you made any changes to the tank recently, like adding any new fish maybe?

Hi all,
Hi so my tank has been cycled for around 4/5 months now and then last night i noticed almost all my fish were at the top of the tank and my shrimp were all at the top of the tank? This morning i woke up to find one fish and 5 shrimp dead at the front of the tank?
I'm sorry to hear that, it is definitely an oxygen issue, but there are a lot of different ways in which you can end up with low levels of dissolved oxygen.

You are much more likely to have oxygen/water quality issues if you have an non-planted, or very lightly planted, tank.

I would strongly recommend some floating plants, they aren't CO2 limited and this allows them to show a fast response to elevated levels of ammonia (NH3) and/or nitrite (NO2).

Most of the popular aquarium literature (and forums) drastically under-plays the importance of plants in the aquarium, and looks at them, at best, as decoration, rather than as the essential under-pinning of successful biological filtration. Have a read through <"Beginner in planted aquarium queries">

Also have a look at <"Plecoplanet: aeration and dissolved oxygen...">, I wrote it about ten years ago specifically for keepers of large rheophilic L. numbers, but it is still relevant to all fish keeping and covers the subject of dissolved oxygen in some detail.

cheers Darrel
