Hello,
Yes, people do this all the time. Do a forum search for "Osmocote". As you can plainly see from the content list, the Nitrogen is derive by using Ammonia so these types of products are best placed on the bottom glass to prevent too much ammonia leeching from the substrate a la Amazonia...
