It's not very popular here, but I tried some purigen recently and that thing does wonders. Didn't really have any problems with clarity, though I did have some tannins, so I put it in more out of curiosity than any need. Only 100g into my 90l. Water clarity is on a completely different level now. Works better than carbon or zeolite when I tried those (I was using them to remove some medicine). Doesn't replace filter wool for fine particulate but that should only be around during first setup or if you disturb the substrate.
