I just saw this guy in a fish distributor list, Brazilian Algae Eater (Apareiodon machrisi). Never heard of it before, and there seems to be very little info online.

Does anyone have any information or experience with them? Are they aptly named, or is it just marketing?

Well then... I guess I'll have to see for myself. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I'll add that, after reading the only scientific source that I could find, Taxonomic Revision of the Parodontidae Family (in Portuguese), there are a lot of species that will look absolutely the same for the standard hobbyist. I guess they have that in common with the SAE. Even this species has slightly different head shapes and color patterns depending on which region it comes from, although still considered the same species due to the anatomy measurements (teeth and scales and whatnot).

If it is actually this species that is being sold, maximum standard size is given as 74mm, with an average of 57mm.

Going back to the supplier's list, it is identified only by its common name, I was the one who associated it with the Apareiodon machrisi species. That's because other sites who had it available a few months ago made this connection. Knowing now that there are many similar species, I'll just refer to it by the common name.

Hi all,

I'd guess it will be a medium sized "Darter" Characin, but not necessarily Apareiodon machrisi. I think there are a lot of different species of these Darter Characins .

cheers Darrel
Darter characine, Parodontidae; quite different to Darter Characin, Crenuchidae. 🙂

The purchase was cancelled by the distributer so... No Brazilian algae eater in sight. I'll keep an eye out for it in future fish lists.

Pretty obscure fish! Apareiodon machrisi is a South American species, but there’s not much info on them in the hobby. From what I’ve read, they’re more of a grazer than a hardcore algae eater like a Siamese Algae Eater. Likely more interested in biofilm and plant matter than cleaning glass. If you get one, let me know how it does!
