Hi, I am wondering if you can help me with a problem - my utricularia graminifolia is growing happily , but it does not appear to be growing any roots and keeps floating away from the substrate

I dose with neutro t ferts from aqua essentials daily - is there anything else I can do to stop the buggers from floating?

Hi all,

Congratulations that it is growing well, it isn't an easy plant to keep happy.

The answer to the roots question is that it doesn't have any roots. All the structures, including the leaves, are modified stems. It should send out stolons as it grows that will keep it anchored, but it might depend on the substrate and live stock.

If you have Amano shrimps etc, it will probably never anchor enough to avoid being pulled up.

Have a look here: <"Utricularia graminifolia">.

Ok, so according to that thread mine shouldn't be growing! I have insanely hard alkaline water... not exactly the same conditions that it likes best...

It will be interesting to see how it gets on long term.

If you have a look at the <"Green Pekoe........"> thread Mr Teapot has some in the moss near the water's surface, but I don't know how hard his water is.

Hi there, my water is very soft - 100% RO and about 80ppm in the tank after adding fertilisers. My UG must have come in as a hitch hiker on another plant as it just appeared in the tank one day - seems to like the conditions as it’s colonising other parts of the tank at the moment. The little mat in the moss is doing well (fingers crossed it will flower one day) but the patch in my carpet plants looks a bit leggy and raggy. All the roots in the picture bellow are from the other plants but you can see the UG’s really thin stem/runners which are slowly forming a thicker web.

See, my waters around 500 ppm+ I think
