Surface agitation

Color me interested! What's the certain intake with lots of slits!? And did you actually notice an increase in flow over the chihiros?

The tiny little slits on the chihiros has been a pain in my blahblahblahblah you see, since a Biomaster 600 slurps a fair bit of water, shrimps have sometimes fallen victim to this particular intake.. Would love a glass intake that doesn't murder my shrimps to this extent.
Just been going through the same challenge! New tiny fish meant my Biomaster 850 was too powerful with a certain lily pipe intake. (It has huge amounts of slits). Just swapped to a Chihiros which has under half the slits and slows the flow. I could have done this on the oase, but hey, it's just another reason for me to fiddle around with stuff. 🙂

Now, this will not be very scientific, but I'll tell you my observations!

The pipework that seemed to maximise the flow of the Biomaster 850 was the ADA v7 inlet. (See image below). This was paired with the ADA v7 outlet.

The four observations using the ADA set versus the Chihiros set were:
  1. Small fish in the ADA flow were unable to cope swimming against it, but they could when the Chihiros set was used.
  2. There was less air escape, bubbles during the CO2 on + photo period. (Note: this is a similar experience to when using the Oase standard supplied pipes).
  3. The ADA pipes seem to be a uniform diameter throughout the whole pipe, but the Chihiros seem to be slightly reduced at the curve points.
  4. I loved the ADA set, but you become very poor as soon as you buy it!
As I say, this was hardly a scientific experiment! But there was no way I could keep the ADA set on the tank + 850 with young growing fish! Even my Salfin Molly was having greater struggles when caught in the flow.

The ADA slits are small, but wide and with double the amount on the Chihiros. I am not sure whether this is totally shrimp-proof, but anything has the potential to capture very small animals.

Great stuff.

I think part of your discovery is indeed scientific though; Buying ADA stuff will definitely make you poor. I think you're right about the chihiros pipes as well. Too few, too small slits.

I'll take a look around and see if I can find something similar to the ADA stuff that doesn't make my eyes water when I look at the price 😭 360£-ish for a set here ☠️

Indeed. I have been really suspicious about the general glassware and have long suspected they are limiting flow by design. That is normally fine, but in a larger tank with larger filters, that can become a problem. e.g. if the filter does provide a good flow but doesn't due to the glassware.

What I really want to do is get a digital flow meter and force water through the different pipes to see how many litres a minute they can handle. Totally not needed, but I do love testing these things!

That would be very interesting. You could also test different filters in different conditions that way:

  • With standard media / without media / with whatever media you deem optimal for your use
  • With standard in and outflow / with lily pipes of different makes / with steel in and outflow
  • With / without inline heater or inline co2 of different makes

You could build an entire youtube channel around it. I'd certainly subscribe. 😁😁

I have a funny feeling that the channel would have two subscribers - you and me. 😀
