Snails are cool and IMHO should be in a planted tank - but not as an infestation! A piece of par-boiled cucumber left in for 24hrs will, when removed, catch an awful lot of snails. Repeat, then repeat again...
I was suffering with a bit of a snail take over in my tank and wasn't sure why as not over feeding. Thought it might have been the bogwood but guess it's just one of those things. I introduced 5 yoyo (Pakistani) loaches and within a couple of weeks the numbers were right down. They are beautiful, interesting fish too, full of character. My friend had a similar issue and used zebra loaches to great effect. They don't grow as big as chain loaches but seem to do the same job. There's still a few snails in the tank doing their thing but nowhere near as many.
