Scaping Problems

I have a problem- I have a number of ideas i want to try for a scape. However, I am reluctant to trying out different ideas due to the substrate.

I am using lava rock, which will be part of a main structure, and will extend to the aquarium floor, under a high level of substrate.

I want to keep taking out and replacing the substrate for each idea- however i am finding it difficult to do so with soil and moler clay, and am being hesitant.

What is the best way around this? What do you guys do?

I just put all my substrate in and move it around when I need to, if it's dry it's easy enough, I don't see that you've got much choice.

Find or make a box the same size as the tank footprint fill it with cat litter or gravel and try the ideas out in there first, once happy transfer the hardscape over to the tank.
