Redmoor DSM Jungle

It will be a combination of light and co2 - too much light for the amount of co2 getting to the plants. Reducing the light will definitely help but look at getting the best distribution of flow also. You could move the filter intake to the same end as the lily pipe. That way the flow should go across the top of the tank and then return along the bottom through all those low plants. It looks like it probably just flows right across the top of them at the moment. That should get more of the co2 to where it is really needed. For a couple of days, put your drop checker low down on the front of the glass as close to the melting plants as possible to see what it's doing down there.

The flow seems like it is going where it should, right across the top aided by a powerhead and then down the glass at the far end and back along the bottom and up again at the lily pipe/powerhead. I've got the light sitting on the edge of the glass so space is limited to each corner of the tank for anything to overhang the glass. Found 2 shrimp on the floor this morning, but they where still alive so I presume they had just jumped before I came down. Managed to get them back in and they seem happy enough, still doesn't stop me worrying everytime I leave the house now or that the dogs might get them before I do!

Just ordered some HC and Eleocharis acicularis as I think I need more going on around the base of the wood and to fill out a few gaps, also as this is only a trial tank in my eyes at trying stuff before purchasing my optiwhite, I want to get things right and HC is something I want to see growing and how it progresses. It's just not the same as looking at pictures.

Hopefully just the lighting then.

Escapees can be a bit of a worry. We once found a flying fox six foot from the tank that had managed to launch itself through the 5mm gap between the tank and lid.

Yeah I'm almost 100% sure it was the light, we'll see how the plants recover by signs of new shoots and by the growth of the new plants. Staurogynes are showing new shoots everyday. Yeah the shrimp was around 2 metres from the tank, either it crawled or it has one hell of a flip !

I went the away for the weekend and so missed a day or 2 of adding nutrients and maybe a day behind doing a water change but overall I wasn't that concerned. I had planted some HC before I left and couldn't wait to come back and see how it had progressed over 4 days. I came back to find it gone! No sign of it anywhere in the tank, even looked like someone had pulled it out but I knew that was not the case. I also noticed that the Alternanthera rosaefolia and 'mini' had holes on its leaves. I started to think it had something to do with missing a few doses of nutrient but then I noticed the culprit .... Amano shrimp! I watched them sitting on a 'mini' leaf, munching away and making holes, I couldn't believe it and had never heard of shrimp damaging the actual plant. Maybe they are lacking in something but I thought there was enough food in the tank. Perhaps not, so I added some algae wafers for them for now. Any suggestions? Or has anyone seen this before?
