I have 40ppm nitrate in my tap water so I don't dose this, I dose P which I think contains a little K.

My question is, should I dose for K and is there a way of telling that I need to?

Hi,
The wise man doses N, P and K in the proper amounts regardless of hat his test kit says. That way this question is never even an issue.

I know I have high nitrates already so I am not comfortable about adding more. So if I am unwise and dont dose nitrate, should I dose K separately and if so how much?

I guess I'll just look for K deficency and dose if it appears
