Anything that doesn't dissolve into the water Most readily available PVC, PE, Acrylic, Silicone tubing can be used. As are your filter hoses, most likely PVC..
For decorative purposes PVC is the easiest and cheapest to work with. It can be shaped if heated and glued. For example if you rough up a piece of pvc tubing with caorse sand paper, you could smear silicone kit over it and throw sand or gravel into the wet silicone. Let it cure and you have a somewhat more natural looking object. Mosses could be grown to it. Kit doesn't adhere very good to the other mentioned materials.
