Planting java fern for effect

I'm wanting to achieve a thick swaying mass of java fern on a vertical trunk. I can't seem to find vids etc on planting then

How would one go about attaching the ferns (I'm using superglue gel) Horizontally in stripes? Vertically? How far apart should the 'rhizomes' (?) be so as to allow movement & growth but not stifle the plants and flow?

Yes, growing point of the rhizome pointing up.

Yes it is the bit where the new fronds are forming. You can see it on these photos of "Hydrophytes".


I'd space them reasonably widely around the circumference of the trunk, and I'd be tempted to go for a small overlap vertically.
