Hi all,

Smooth Sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus).

Sadly not, but you can feed it to your Rabbit, should you have one?

cheers Darrel
OK thanks for that

Hi all,
The other interesting thing is that you can see the effect of nutrient deprivation. This is a plant of disturbed ground with extreme plasticity in growth form. Give it plenty of light, nutrient and water and it will rapidly grow 120 cm high with big leaves and hundreds of flowers.

In your case the seed has germinated in a limestone rock and been watered by the rain, so is deficient in pretty much all of the <"essential nutrients for plant growth">. A complete "starter pack" of nutrients comes with the seed, but after that is exhausted everything will be in short supply.

I'm assuming that the purpling that you are seeing is a combination of <"fixed nitrogen (N)"> and phosphate (PO4---) deficiency. If the plant survived long enough you might get a single flower or it might give up the unequal struggle and just shuffle of its mortal coil.

cheers Darrel
