Hi, I have noticed in some websites and specialized forums that more and more planted tank keepers are using an overflow and a sump combined as filtering system. I have read about how overflows and sumps work, but I don't really know which are the advantages and disadvantages of using this system compared to canister filters or the situation in which they are more convenient. Thanks!

Cheers,
Jordi

Use whatever technique you find interesting. Success or failure will not depend on which method is used. The reasons are logistical and there are some valid reasons for using either method. Sumps require more attention to CO2 application because they off-gass CO2 more easily, however, they provide a better chance for Oxygen recovery at night when Oxygen production is by plants is curtailed. This is also an advantage of canister wet/dry filters such as the Eheim 2229, which gives you a little of both methods.
