hi all after reading forums for weeks then finding this one and reading for a few more weeks I've decided to register not only to annoy you all with lots of questions but to try and make a log/journal of my experience of setting up a 4ft tank 170l low tech planted tank .

Welcome mate, the journal is a great idea. Sometimes pictures say a thousand words and save a lot of confusion. Starting low tech is also a good move and less problematic.
