@Ratvan suggested I post pics of my 12l blue shrimp tank, and over the break I have had time to tidy up all eight of them, so here they are. Not properly grown in yet obviously. In order, orange, blue, yellow, red rili, green, black. The orange and the black aren't breeding terribly true and a few weeks ago on I made the mistake of swapping some Hornwort from one tank to another, so there are a few outliers in one or two tanks 🙂. I'm really happy with them though. The last two tanks are empty and I am looking at white and orange rili, but I haven't decided yet. There's seed shrimp and moina in most of them too.

They are 20cm by 30cm by 20cm high and I have them with the short side facing. They each have a 5v light and 5v heater and a sponge filter and are connected with 32mm waste pipe siphons. There is a sump at the back, currently a 5l water bottle that I am upgrading to a 60cm X 15cm tank when I can afford it. There's a little pump in there that cycles very slowly, as fast as the siphons can accommodate.

@Chez_ What brand are those little heaters? Are they good? I am thinking about one for my son's tank!

Tanks look amazing mate. Love wee shrimp tanks and wish I could have a few more.

Are they siphons or are they overflows? I only ask because in the event of a pump failure you could end up with a flood. I’m sure you’ve got it covered but just in case!

Great setup mate, working towards something similar myself. I quite like the short side facing setup and it would let me keep more tanks/shrimp varieties in my limited space 🙂

They're not quite doing the job. They're set to 25c and they're always on. The temp seems to be between 22 and 23 in the tanks. However... I do keep the house brassic. The shrimp seem to be thriving, anyway. I think I might put a booster in the bigger sump when I get it and then they'll have less work to do.

@simon_the_plant_nerd they're siphons, but because everything is the same level they work both ways. There's a little pump in the sump that uses 8mm pipe to take it back to tank #1. If the pump packs up, it just equalises out -- thankfully it worked as planned during the power cut! The only disaster I've experienced was knocking the end of the 8mm pipe out of the HOB filter box with some peace lilies in that it's jammed in to on tank #1. I have now gaffered it down to avoid more human error issues 🙂.

What are you using to feed USB power to the heaters? If each one is not getting the full 2 amps they won't be putting out the full 10 watts. (eg. 2 of them plugged into a cheap USB double charger will probably only get about 5 watts each...)

I've been caught like that before with the kids iPads and I think I'm okay -- its a hub that will take 20 USBs,100W/20A and I've only got the 8 heaters in it: https://amzn.eu/d/6LQx70L

All the kit is pretty cheap and cheerful though, so if it's not my freezing living room (heated almost entirely by tanks 🤣) then it might just be a case of you get what you pay for. It's slightly better now I've lidded the tanks, them being so small won't be helping either I guess.

Yeah, that looks more than enough power to max out the heaters!

23C is about the ideal max temp for cherries, so you are pretty much there in any case.... no need to push it to 25...
