I have lots of moss in the garden, just wanted to know is it *safe enoough* to put into my Planted 10l tank, bare in mind, atm, im not sure what the inverts will be yet.

Hi all,
If it's above the water line? you should be all right, you need to make sure that the moss is one that is growing on the same substrate in the tank as it was in your garden, as some moss only grow on acid rocks, some on alkaline, some only on wet wood etc. although some species will grow on a wide range of substrates (damp soil etc.) Some of our moss is very attractive in a terrarium google "Thuidium tamariscinum" for a really common one in the UK.

For submerged you need to buy tropical aquatic mosses.

Not to contradict but ive found that he substrae is not importat for native mosses.
All mine have been growing on cross stiching mesh.

I think there's something in that, star moss can be grown submerged but only if the rocks it's on are lime based and the water exceptionally hard. I think it's worth trying both ways, on original material and on nothing. It'd dispell what ever myths.

Luke, what native mosses are you growing? I'd love to see some photos.
