Micosorum not doing well, anyone know why?

Hi,

I have two Microsorum plants, one that was healthy and one that had Osmotic damage from badly mixed ferts and had to be cut right back to the base.

The one I cut back has just started to bounce back, but now the other has practically lost all the leaves. I removed all the dead last week and it now looks like this.

As you can see, it's in a sorry state.

I've been without CO2 due to hardware issues you can see in my journal, but lights have been at 4 hours a day for about a month throughout these issues and I didn't think this plant needed added CO2 anyway.

Does anyone know what's up please?

Ok, thanks, I wasn't sure whether it was the CO2 or the lack of light.

When I did my water change last night my Ech. Reni had melted and one of my Ech. Rose has one leaf melted. Hopefully CO2Art can find out what's wrong with my CO2 kit soon.

Me too, recently purchased some different java sp. from a fellow aquarist, all grown in high tech. And all i placed in a non co2 tank suffered a draw back. Not as extensive as shown in your pick but they where clearly not happy with the change.

Also noticed of what i think it might be a survival strategy of java fern, all leaves showing melt (i didn cut away just left them in the tank) almost all show an accelerated growth of young plantlets. So before you dispose the leaves inspect them closely at the back side, the new growth starts there very tiny as little new java on its own, if you see some take it off or just leave it in the tank. Even on a cut off leave they grow on and can be taken off and replanted when big enough to handle. 🙂

I cut back all the remaining dead leaves last night, but the root system and rhizome appears to be in pretty good shape and I did save everything that looked healthy including new plantlets and tucked those down in to the existing root system to hold them in place. Hopefully I can keep as much as possible alive until the CO2 system is back up and running. It's certainly tempting me to go for a rescape and some new plants to supplement what survives once I have CO2 again.

Hi all,
Not sure about the melt, I might lengthen the light period while there isn't much ambient light at this time of year. I'm not a CO2 user, but if I was, and I didn't have added CO2 available, I would try and ensure a lot of surface turbulence. Low tech you get higher CO2 levels with a large gas exchange surface.

cheers Darrel
