Hello, everyone.

I used to be an enthusiastic aquarist who was quite active on various aquarium forums. However, due to my conflicted nature, I eventually got blacklisted almost everywhere I was involved (barrreport.com, plantedtank.net, and also here on ukaps.org). Seven years ago I quit the aquarium hobby. Now I am "cautiously" returning to it again. My main interest is to get to the bottom of things, to discover the deeper nature of things, the principles and laws hidden behind external phenomena. In practice, this manifests itself in the way that I try to carry out various experiments to find out what conditions are crucial for the successful cultivation of aquarium plants. I try to share the results of some of my experiments along with my insights on my personal website golias.net. It's slow going, though, because there are a lot of factors that play a role. And because I'm trying to do these experiments in a methodically sound way, it is also quite time and money consuming.

Here is a small sample from my latest experiment that I just finished:

PS: I would like to thank the Committee Members for reconsidering my request to regain access to this forum and lifting my lifetime ban.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! If you are interested, I can describe my last experiment in more detail here [on ukaps.org] after Christmas.

Hi all,
I would like to thank the Committee Members for reconsidering my request to regain access to this forum and lifting my lifetime ban.
Welcome back Marcel, I think a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then.

Your name came up in a conversation with @AlecF recently and personally I'm really pleased you are back. You've had the occasional mention in your absence <"Long term effects of co2 exposure"> & <"Algae help!! Starting to take over!!">.

cheers Darrel

Experiment looks very interesting, I’m looking forward to reading about it.

Hello! I see that you have really good success with golden nesaea. Whatever I did, I was not able to grow this plant. May I ask what is your water parameters? GH/KH/PH, substrate, light? What fertilizer are you dosing? Thank you in advance.

As I have already stated:

I'm sorry, but if I understand the terms of the committee correctly (after my ban was lifted), I'm now a little "quarantined" for about a month (so you'll have to wait until "after Christmas" ... and Orthodox Christmas is not celebrated until January 6). 🙂

I luck forward to the updates, Orthodox or not. Been a while since we had any serious discussions about fish fingers 👉

Hi Marcel,
I had a look at your web site, some appears to need translating, (us english are lazy when it comes to 2nd languages), some early writing appear very similar to text books, and other parts are behind a pay wall.
Your apparatus, and methods are interesting there are so many variables, but there seems to be very few defined "repeatable base lines" so alternating extremes will give an idea of a GENERAL "good zone / area".
However I commend your spirit, and look forward with interest for your results.
I have found that certain plants will thrive while others won't in my tanks, also with time it changes as the tanks mature.
Welcome back after your hiatus.

Hi @jaisol,
Yes, it is true that some of the articles on my website are unfortunately not translated yet. Of course, I plan to do so, but many other activities are keeping me from doing so (mainly work and the need to earn money to sustain one's living; I earn money for my hobby with a second job). The older experiments (with a few exceptions) don't have a very sophisticated methodology. The newer ones are perhaps better, but I admit that it is completely against the rules of good science to conduct my experiments without the necessary number of repetitions. I have a simple (and perhaps understandable) reason for this: time, energy and money. I don't know many researchers who fund their research themselves. Financially, I find it very challenging. But I enjoy it and I have a few friends who support me in my endeavors, which is an invaluable help. It follows logically then that my results will never be reliable and will always be [at best] hypotheses, which I would like to leave to others to test. I can only offer interesting suggestions. My main goal now is to identify the factors that have the greatest influence on plant prosperity. A lot of aquarists talk about CO2, light, macro and micro nutrients. I feel there are many other factors that are overlooked but could play a much bigger role than most think (e.g. pH, redox and microbes). We'll see how I get on.
Marcel
Edit: I've thought a lot about whether I should hide my new articles behind a paywall or leave them accessible to all, but given the expense of the equipment I've had to enter, it seems only fair to do so. A person who goes to the trouble of writing a book then also sells it to cover the cost and work involved. I don't want anything for my work, but I'd like to pay back at least what I had to invest in experimental equipment (golias.net). Once I get that back (or at least close to it), I'm ready to make it available to everyone.

I think everyone has the same juggling act with time / money / other things. LOL, there is always at least one in short supply. You are doing what a lot of us only dream about, I would like to wish you well with this.
I'm sure a lot of people will be eagerly following this thread, and can't wait for you to start, I for one am looking forward to it .

I agree. Looking forward to hearing more!
