Hi all,

We use to be able to edit our post and the OP was also able to edit there posts in their threads.
I never seen that it was an issue when we all had full edit. But now most post threads have a time limit and then they are locked. This does present a small problem in some threads eg we are unable to update the download links for the IFC calculator and keep the first post updated.
Is the plan to keep the edit function locked. esp on the first/couple post of a thread by the OP as this was a useful function as you could keep them updated.

Cheers

I think this was in light of some members leaving and then editing their post history to take out their content in protest (I may be wrong though). Although you raise an interesting issue I hadn't thought of about the new system! Hopefully they can find workaround.

Yeah, the edit lock can be a pain, especially for keeping important posts updated. Maybe the mods can allow longer edits for the first few posts in a thread? Worth asking them directly.

You are probably right. So the solution was to punish the entire forum community for the actions of a few... :banghead:

Yes having the edit is very useful for tidying up post esp when like myself you are dyslexic or have threads/Journals which need the first post updating like CO2 used Database -needs your data

The edit function only worked after you had make at least 5 posts in the past. Maybe increasing the number of posts have to make is another option 50, 500, 1000... so folk who add a lot of content can have the option to edit/tidy up there psts/content. Just a thought.

Having to ask for permission to edit the first post of the IFC calculator is a bit of a PITA IMO.

That's correct - the ability edit old historic posts was being abused, so for the preservation of the forum as the incredibly valuable resource it is, that was changed to preserve it and ensure its continuity.

Not a punishment at all, a move to ensure preservation of content and continuity of the forum. But you are right - as in real life - the irresponsible actions of the few, results is rules being implemented that affect the many.

Yes me too, with my appalling spelling and grammar sometimes - that is why we agreed a 48 hour window to enable people to edit and tidy posts.

The IFC Calculator is a bit of a unique usage case. What yourself and @Hanuman created there is a fantastic resource, so I will do everything I can to try and enable you to access that opening post to make the updates you need.

@Wookii Hi m8 and hope you are well, all good here and hope the forum isn't taking up too much off your time.

Was being abused - and the offeredders was editing their post, which the forum had a backup off, so they able to be restored once spotted. A PITA yes 100%, but continuity was restored.

Not a punishment at all,

Its a punishment to the content of the forum, the ability to edit and improve the quality of own posts has been removed, which decreases the quality of the content on the forum. Regular backups if done correct ensures the content is safe

No, every Journal is a unique case of personal pride.

Some folk have been naughty, so it feels like the grown ups have set new rules the prevent the child misbehaving.

I am just giving a 'heads up' how these changes affect the normal posting members.

OK, so we've been able to modify the editing rights, so all users can now indefinitely edit the first post on any thread they create.

So that should allow @Hanuman to update the first post on the IFC Calc thread, and will hopefully give you the ability to edit first posts in journals @Zeus.

All other posts still have 48 hours of editing ability to correct typos or make amendments, whilst still preserving older posts and threads for the benefit of future generations of aquarists.

I hope that helps.

Thank you @Wookii', sorry for being a bit pushy/aggressive and it wasn't aimed at you personally M8. I fully understand why it was implemented at the time. Having the edit back for first post is very handy not just for the IFC, but also for many threads/Journals and I truly believe it helps improve the quality for the first post in many cases, which inturns helps the quality of the Forum.

Hopefully we don't get folk abusing it
