Hi, I've just bought an Aquael Leddy 60 tank set which comes with a 6w LED light. For my purposes, this light is way too bright and isn't dimmable so I wondered if anyone had found a dimmable light which will clip into the lid housing? Failing that, can I fit a nicrew light into the hood?? Not sure if they're rated for use inside hoods though...

Hi there,
I have a Varmhus light, available from Amazon which I used when my standard Fluval Flex light began to fail.
It won't clip in to your hood but holds on with four suckers. They have a large range of different lengths & wattages along with various combinations of blue, green, red & white light. The lights are also dimmable & have a very basic 8, 10 or 12 hour timer.
I replaced the Flex light eventually but I'm still using the Varmhus one, after a year still working & the suckers are still flexible!

Interesting to know. Ive just been given a fluval flex with the light not working. Good to know the suckers are that strong!!

Do the LEDs have a 12v or 24v transformer to power them ? though expect the leds are a sealed mains powered unit, so unlikey you can add a dimmer .

Might be easier to just place something below the leds to act as a shade, like some clear glass or plastic covered with something like the Fablon or DC_Fix semi clear which also acts to reduce the led shimmer effect.

Yeah, it's just mains powered on/off so can't add a dimmer. The colour of the light is not pleasant either tbh, very stark (though I'm more used to stained water and dim lighting anyway!) so I'd rather change it. I'm assuming that anything IP7 rated would be ok in a hood?

I've seen MD Fish Tanks on Youtube use little squares of black duct tape over the leds until happy with the brightness.

What specific Varmhus model do you have and what do you think of it for plant growth?

That's strange, I also have an Aquael Leddy tank, not as large as 60l but I think the fittings are the same. The light has a rectangular piece on the end which fits into some lugs inside the lid & stops it rotating. Could yours be missing these?
@GQsmo the Varmhus model I have is a 6.7w, 38cm single tube of red, blue, green & white LEDs with the controller wired in to the cable. I was running it with the standard Flex light as nearly ⅓ of the LEDs had failed so it made up the wattage. I doubt it would be powerful enough on its own. I've had no plant growing issues but then all my tanks are slow-tech & dimly lit with tannin stained water. I'm quite chuffed that one of my buce has just flowered!

Mine isn't that posh, it's just a Leddy Sunny! Gives a yellowish light rather than white, which is enhanced with added tannins.

That really is bright in the centre!
I looked up the day/night tanks & it seems the tube is different, much longer & not as large diameter so should light the full width of the tank. Perhaps you have been supplied with the wrong light tube?
I have the short tube in a tank half that size & it is nowhere near as bright but supposedly 6 watts.

It was also meant to be day/night, but it isn't!
I'm considering the Aquael Leddy for my yet to arrive Dennerle Nano Cube White Glass 30L.
From what I have seen there is an older "Aquael Leddy Smart Plant" model at 6W that isn't Day and Night and a "Aquael Leddy Smart Plant Day & Night" at 4.8W which I assume is their updated version.

Right, I've just found the actual instructions for the light (in the tiniest print imaginable above the safety precautions, which are in normal sized writing) and it says to change settings you have to turn it off and back on within 5 seconds. At least it is the correct light, but it still only illuminates the middle of the tank and I'd imagine the light going off and back on to change brightness could be quite unpleasant for the fish!

I nearly bought the day/night tank but decided I wouldn't use the night facility. I think on a shallower tank that light would be positively glaring!
It looks like @dino21's idea of a diffuser might be a temporary fix & would make the light spread appear more even visually.

You could try covering some of the leds with plastic black electrical tape!
