I've seen it work here in the northern part of the globe, here in the British Isles, but only twice that I can recall, on both occasions against a broadly north facing window. I can't imagine there was a lot of plant growth for 4 or 5 months of the year, both tanks were unheated with, in one case goldfish - it was a large tank and heavily filtered- and in the other a selection of danios and unfiltered, the latter looked good, the former was just about 'acceptable' to the eye but perfectly healthy.right in the window
