I have had a 400l trop tank and a smaller marine tank, after having a break I'm gonna try a heavly planted tank.. From what I'm reading on here external filters seem to be more about turn over than filtering itself, so why have them at all?
I mean if flow is so important then use a couple of small (dependent on tank size) hydors and as for filtering, most tanks look very lightly stocked with fish and with weekly water changes.... Would this be enough to go without a filter on a 150l tank??

Or you could use a trickle filter & sump!
Filtration is very important as are large water changes on the high energy set ups, we don't want a build up of impurities in our tanks - basically the cleaner you can keep the tank the better.
