Java fern disintegrating

Hi all,

I recently split my java fern plantlets and repositioned them in the tank. I read that it was ok to trim the roots as they had got a bit unsightly. However, the ones I did not trim are looking fine but the ones that I trimmed are disintegrating and the planlets are pretty much gone! The roots were still had a good inch left on them but this trim has obviously not done them any good.

Was i given incorrect advice with trimming the roots or have I just been unlucky?

Thanks

Mike

I never trim the roots on mine, I just wrap them around the wood, and then staple the plant to the wood through the roots. I think the problem must be to do with physical damage to the roots (letting in pathogens?), rather than a nutrient effect, because the "roots" (really rhizoids) aren't meant to play much part in nutrient uptake, but just act as a physical anchor.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I won't be trimming the roots again!
