Is there a point in using bio media in my HOB Filter?

Im asking this question as I know bacteria will be on pretty much all surfaces inside the tank (plants, hardscape, substrate) and in the filter on the media (sponges and rocks).

But do I really need to have bio media (eg lava rock/seachem matrix etc) in my filter and instead just run sponges and filter floss in it. So that I can have maximum flow for the filter.

I'm currently using an Aquaclear 20 with course sponge as a pre filter and medium course sponge, filter floss and seachem matrix in the filter.

You don’t need special bio media. Your filter sponges will host the bacteria needed for biological filtration. Take a look at:
