The stripes are more defined when they are young, and the red intensifies on the males in the breeding season with the black bands merging. Please note, this fish has been bred a lot, so the colours of captive bred fish can be quite variable.
I find barbs to be very characterful fish but you do need more than 6 otherwise there is a tendency for the smallest one to be bullied too much.

Tempted with these myself but no tank big enough at the moment sadly
took me a while to like this type deep bodies fishes , all thanks to bosemani rainbows , they grow as big as bosemani ? also i presume it to be plant safe ? i know another barb which like to eat plants forgot what the name was.
