what are the benefits of water changes?
Do water changes help with algae and how?

Yes water changes remove organics, from fish poo, plants and other sources in the water, which algae can feed on.

Also if dosing EI a water change will remove any excess fertilisers not used by the plants, stopping the levels continually building up.
