I've been looking into water purification (in adition normal filtering). I don't want to go for RO, but have come accross HMA filters as a possible haf way house. Except I can't find any info on what they actually are and how they work.
Can anyone help?

Re: HMA filters

work similar to ro filters (bolt into water supply) work abit faster only remove heavy metals iirc standard carbon block ones just remove disolved metals + chlorine however some now also have the ability to add an additional chloramine block to them which will remove those too.

they don't remove other minerals though like RO filters do so no need to remineralise the water for usage i believe

Re: HMA filters

Having read up on HMA fiters (thanks for the link Ceg) I am still concerned that there maybe some unknown toxin(s) getting into my tank from the mains supply.

Obviously without knowing what it is it's difficult to know how to address the issue.
1) My guess is RO is the best solution, but I don't think I can justify that.
2) I'm not sure an HMA filter will be any more benefit over something like Seachem Prime.
3) API make a Tap Water Purifier filter that claims to remove "all impurities from tap water", which seems a slightly optimistic claim.

Any thought or suggestions to make sure my cleaner than it may/may not currently be?

Well, as you said mate, "unknown" just about renders any other solution except for RO irrelevant. Unsure exactly what symptoms you are seeing in your tank. Might help shed some light...

Cheers,

Mainly dead fish with no obvious sores, parasites, inflammation, or any of the usual signs of desease.
Occasional laboured breathing, some slight clamping, swimming with heads pointing upwards (like a swim bladder problem), sometimes lying on the substrate or on plants, and in the case of Gouramis, deteriorating whiskers.

Fish effected: 9 x Dwarf Red Gouramis, 6 Neons, 2 Killis.
Fish apparently not effected: Ottos and Amanos (no corpses, but I've not seen all of them out together for quite some months).

Most recent spates of deaths have been a day or so after water changes. I've reduced the number of water changes slightly as I suspect tap water may be a problem, though I realise this is a double edged sword.
