Half Barrel pond and new pond project.

Thank you for the lily advice.

It came in a 3ltr pot, I have it on the shelf for now in a corner.

Is it ok for the leaf to be under the water while it grows? Or do I need to lift it so the leaf is always at the surface?

The other plants I ordered have arrived too, although they too have a LOT of growing to do.

I think in future il buy any plants in person so I can see what I am being sold but it is early in the season I suppose.

If anyone is interested these are the plants in the pond right now:

Elodea densa
Hornwort
Albatross lily
Creeping jenny
Pickerel weed
Persicaria amphibia
Golden club
Greater spearwort

I ordered a chameleon plant and bog grass but they arrived tiny and unplanted so went in the barrel basket.

It is fine for the leaf to be under the water at first, but not too deep, preferably just a few inches so it does not struggle to reach the surface. It will grow quickly once the weather warms up a bit, they are only just starting into growth at this time of year.

I would probably leave it in the 3 litre pot for now, on the shelf sounds perfect. I would let it grow and get a bit stronger and maybe think about repotting it to a larger container in the summer. Latour-Marliac recommend a 14 litre container for Albatross.

Thank you again for the advice, gonna leave all the potted plants on the shelf until they are ready to move.

And wow that's a big container for the albatross, hoping it's foilage will cover roughly half the pond once grown.

The fountain is tilted slightly, could keep it like that and put the lily front right.

There is a lot of hornwort with weights in the front left corner, waiting for it to take off.
 
Picked up 5 small sarasa comets today for the pond, I would get a picture but they went straight into the pile of hornwort and have only seen glimpses of them since, guess they like it.

Plants are mostly growing, lily been the exception, that has barely moved but the others are growing, the creeping jenny is peaking out of the water now, the pickerel weed is getting bushier, the persicaria has shot up to the point I'm sinking it next week, the club is slowly reaching the surface.

A lot of algae on the liner, some hair algae I've been using a piece of bamboo to remove but the water looks ok.IMG_20240418_175919741.jpg
 
Looks amazing I built these ponds over the weekend decided I would have a go at a real pond aswell

Let me know what you guys think and what plants I should add to it

Planning on putting rocks around the edges and something like pea gravel

Pond update I've add more plants now as it seemed to be going merky had blanket weed for a bit or just green algae but it seems to have cleared up bought a pond pump and am now running it though this sort of bog filter water fall which I'm planning to be planting soon it's no where near finished but has turned into a rather fun and exciting project
All the tubs are still going strong and one is producing plenty of daphina to feed the ricefish in the tubs and gold fish in the pond

Good to be back.

Nothing but positives from the pond.

The lily is flowering, plants all growing great, some algae but nothing too bad oh and juvenile fish!

Yes, spotted a few young dark coloured fish around the lily.

Edit: Just realised when you press right on the slides how it shows how the pond looked when first set up.

I am really happy with how it has turned out.

I have a barrel that’s about the same size as that. I ended up lining it in the end as the water loss started to increase over time. There’s a few inches of aqua soil in the bottom. I only have elodea in it though. I initially put a lily in there but it perished over the winter. I put a few male endlers in it over the summer months.

I was debating lining mine with off cuts from the pond but in the end decided I didn't need the barrel now, I made the mistake of not knowing water lettuce dies off and makes a mess if left....

The turtle statue getting blown in and sinking all the duckweed didn't help either.
 
Question: When should I start winding down the pond?

I assume its just cutting stuff back?

I've got a net to hook over too to stop debris etc.
 
That's all I do, just trim plants back as they die down & try to stop too many leaves falling in & sinking.
My ponds are filter-less so I can't help with that but I do take the solar fountain in & clean it ready for next year.
I seem to have loads of goldfish fry this year so I'll need to fix a cover over the pond so it doesn't freeze!
