It may be easier to grow out of water.
I trimmed some last year and chucked the water into one of my planters outside.
It somehow managed to survive the UK winter and proceeded carpeting the planter in the spring.
Planter only gets few hours of sun in the mornings.
I grew it 20 years ago, under t8 lights, medium to low intensity. I was injecting CO2 from an yeast culture in water bottles. Very unstable levels. Although it never carpeted, it did grow well, slowly but steadily. Even in far from ideal conditions, it was always healthy.
