glass surface skimmer issues

Hi first post on the forum and after some help.
I have recently bought the glass surface skimmer from aquarium gardens and having real trouble getting it to work.
Despite making the adjustment to pull purely from the skimmer, it still just takes in water from the bottom or gaps where the float sits in the main tube. Could this be a defect with this particular piece..... a Friday skimmer.

Not 100% sure as I don't have the product myself, but I have read of others who had to trim the surfces skimmer tubing to get a similar product to work correctly.
Some pics would help diagnose the issue

Why not give Dave from aquarium gardens a call? They have a few running on their systems so should be ideal for hints and tips.
