If Tesco's cat litter is fired (Mollar) clay then I wonder if some of the other clays abundant around the world could be used in a similar fashion? I'd expect the CE to vary somewhat but it would be handy as there are lots of different coloured clays around. Many are much lighter but there are some darker ones as well.

Hi all,

They can, nearly all clays turn red when you calcine (heat) them, it is just the iron being oxidised to Ferric 3 oxide ("rust").

Luis had a go with some of the clay from the small scientific furnace in the lab. All the details are in this thread "Darrell's (dw1305's) soil thread" <http://www.ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=11579>.

cheers Darrel
