Might be a stupid question but why do I only get film on the surface when I use CO2?

Try a search on surface film or scum I'm sure you will find your answer...

You probably always had it, the small bubbles from the CO2 just highlight it. Use your outflow to break up the scum on the surface a little without any splashing. Do a search like Troi suggests.

Bio film is usually sign of poor plant health, though can occur when fresh plants are first placed in water.

Rather than sort the film via outflows/airpumps/absorbing by kitchen towel etc you need to sort the cause of the film rather than the symptom. My bet would be poor CO2 distribution for your light level.

I suffered bio film when I first started CO2 and EI, but fixed by adding a powerhead to distribute CO2 better and film stopped. Oh air pump at night helps as well.

I got some biofilm recently when weather was at its hottest. Presumably this was down to increased gassing off of co2

Hmmmm maybe, my plants were bad after a house move and was only using liquid carbon and ferts so thought I'd throw one of my CO2 systems on there to nurse them back quicker so maybe they're adjusting at the mo.
