I use a 2213 on my tank, its been running a couple of months now with no problems apart from the flow reducing quite a bit so I cleaned the pads and normal service was resumed. Now it looks like it needs doing again, twice in as many months, is this normal? I have the media in which was supplied , should I change this ? Just the pads I mean. For something else ?

Hello there,
Not sure what you mean by pads? Foam (and if so what grade/density?) or floss? Of course, the finer the grade the moreit needs cleaning. If you want to make it less of an issue stick some filter sponge over your filter intake - this then traps a lot of the mucka nd is much easier to take out and clean (and it stops your fish and shrimp getting sucked onto the filter!)
Hope this helps,
Matt

It will depend on your stocking in your tank and how much mess your livestock produce. If memory serves, the 2213 will have a fine filter sponge and several coarse ones. You could perhaps remove the fine sponge, but you may notice your water isn't as clear.

Once a month is good maintenance protocol anyways... You'd be suprised at how much mess is produced when there's nothing in a tank, I clean my filter once a month an have no live stock yet all the polishing pads etc are always black with filth.
You can stick what ever you need in there, polishing pads are not really vital, they just get the water clearer.

Sorry, what i mean is the sponges , rather than the actual media, I have in there what it was supplied with, should i replace the fine sponge or is rinsing it monthly good enough?
is the standard media combination ok or is there a better media combination?

Hi all,
I'd chuck all the foam out of the filter body, and 1/2 fill it with ceramic rings or similar. I just have a sponge on the inlet. This means that you have only to clean this external sponge rather than opening the filter up etc.

I use a DIY sponge like the one from this post <http://www.ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=15341>, but Eheim supply an attachment. If you have a look on EBay etc. it is the "EHEIM PREFILTER for External Canister Filter" - EHEIM No 4004320.

cheers Darrel
