that's one of the reasons I rock prefilter sponges on ALL My filters. Though I ran into an issue recently where my filter had horrible output on my aqueonwhisper filter right? Well I took the prefilter sponge and it was caked with grunge, So I cleaned it out. I hadn't realize it'd been nearly 2 months since i last cleaned the sponge since it looked so clean I didn't realize it was actually all sucked deeper into the sponge, I turned water BLACK that day, and my mint plants probably loved me for it since I tend to pour my old fish water onto plants.

So prefilter sponges could help a lot in keeping them out.
