Just a couple of things I thought of 
First is tank of the month. Members vote, or the mods vote, on whoever they think should win. Pretty simple. Maybe you could get a sponsor to sponsor the comp and add a little prize or something??
Number two is splitting the journals up into 3 (maybe more?) categories depending on size. Small, medium, large or nano, regular, large, super sized etc etc based upon litres anyway.
I don't know if these have been suggested before but I thought I may as well post them, see what response they get.
