Conifer mulch

Hi, in need of some advice again please. I've been weeding my dad's allotment and gotten to his soft fruit bushes, they were pretty weed infested but I've dug as many out as possible and was wondering if conifers made an ok mulch? I ask as there is a big pile of free clippings, I'm guessing from Leylandii, and thought this might supresses the weeds. The problem is its fresh and still green. I looked and it says on the rhs site that it won't effect the soil chemistry but should it be rotted down or left for a while first? I'm only looking at a couple of inches, so it shouldn't heat up too much but is it better to heap it and mulch next spring or not use it at all?

Must confess I trimmed the blackberries and mulched with older conifer bits at the start of September and they look healthy.

TIA
