Hi,

I've got quite a lot 1Kg of JBL Proscape Volcano mineral and I was wondering if I could use it as a biological filtration... After all, Eheim Lav1 seems to be pretty much the same thing...

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Fabio

There's no reason why you can't use anything at all in a filter as medium within reason, if it has a porous surface even better, the problem being how much is it going to impede flow. Small tightly packed granules will cut off a lot of flow through the canister and clog quickly and getting decent flow is important when keeping plants. That's why the 10x turnover rule comes in, people generally buy filters rated 10x the water volume turnover per hour as we know when loaded with media you will get nowhere near that.
