I use that plastic egg crate diffuser, I am not sure that this would spread the load very much at all so I would be worried about point loading 6mm glass like that.

I use dark brown linen thread. It is very strong and the muted colour blends in really well with lots of colours of wood and stone, then it rots away after several months.

If the stone bubbles or fizzes when you put vinegar on it then it will dissolve slowly in water and raise your pH and hardness

As I understand it you should thoroughly boil found items to avoid transferring any parasites to your tank, and that wood should have the bark removed. There is probably more advice than that but those two stuck in my memory

I cut mine just above the lowest leaf node so that they bush out low down, then strip the lowest pair of leaves off the"top" bit that I cut off and replant it.

From a brief stint in another life bashing wooden pegs into the ground in a ragstone quarry it is more like a sandstone so should be ok. Get a bit, leave it to dry and then pour some vinegar or Viakal on it. If it fizzes then it will dissolve, harden your water (if it is possible to make Kent...
Good call. My first tank was the Aquael shrimp set and it has been great. I did replace the filter with a sponge filter because I was scared about shrimplets getting sucked in. The sponge that comes with it is quite coarse but could easily be replaced.
